The Dodgers moved from eighth to second in payroll by nearly doubling their average salary from $685,780 to $1,302,979, and the Angels rose from fifth to third at $1,136,798, in figures recently released. The average baseball salary in 1991 was $851,492, a 42.5% increase from 1990’s average of $597,537. The Oakland Athletics, who fell to fourth place after winning three consecutive American League pennants, had the highest average at $1,394,119. The A’s also led the payroll list in 1990 at $804,643.
