Two weeks ago, we introduced a series of reviews of Ventura County video stores. Here’s the second in that series. This time, we went to the Videola, 412 E. Harvard Blvd., Santa Paula.

Location: The store is conveniently situated next to California 126. There is a nice parking lot out front; it’s small, but then again so is the store.

Atmosphere: It is very family-oriented, something that is clear from the moment one steps into the store. There’s a little desk to the left of the entrance where children can draw and keep otherwise constructively occupied while their elders select videos. To the right of the entrance is a display case full of souvenir mugs, stuffed animals and office supplies--yes, office supplies--for those who feel the need to watch “Terminator” while paying the monthly bills.

Selection: Like we said, it’s a small store, and accordingly it doesn’t house the world’s--or the county’s--largest collection of videos. However, it does have diversity. There’s a small but sweet children’s section, highlighted by a series of Muppet movies and educational videos. There’s also a collection of Shirley Temple movies. On the other side of the store is a substantial religion section. There are also areas featuring music, martial arts, Westerns and war movies, Spanish language videos and science fiction films (including “Class of Nuke ‘Em High.” We couldn’t find “Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Part II,” but then again we didn’t really look all that hard).

Pick of the Week: This week it is actually picks of the week, both from the religion section. There’s “Pope John Paul II Visits America 1987,” a compilation of ABC News footage, and “Pope John Paul II,” the movie, starring Albert Finney--perhaps an appropriate Christmas double feature.

Decor: Nothing unusual, just the typical movie posters on the walls.

Rental cost: The store rents to members and non-members. A six-month membership costs $25. One-day rental rates for members are $1.99 for all videos Thursdays through Mondays, and 99 cents for all videos Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For non-members, the one-day rates are $3.49 for new releases, $1.99 to $2.99 for other features, and 99 cents for children’s videos, music videos and stand-up comedy videos.
