This is another program that’s in disarray and has a new coach. The Spartans are 28-103 during the past six seasons; they have finished in last place or tied for last five times during that time. Enter Burton, who had good success at Fullerton. “It’s been a lot of work so far,” he said. “So far, the kids have worked hard, harder, I think, than they ever had. They’re the ones who have had to make the changes.” Despite the team’s poor record last season, there is some talent. After all, the current seniors won the league title at the sophomore level. “The cupboard is not bare,” Burton said. “These kids have known some success. We need to capitalize on that.” McArthur is the top returning scorer, having averaged five points as a reserve. No one else on the team averaged more than three. But Burton’s system doesn’t require a lot of points. He plans to use the same control offense he employed at Fullerton last season. “We’re going to have to win with defense,” he said. “We’re not bad offensively, but we’re limited.” Lebrecht emerged as an offensive threat during the summer. He will probably see more time at guard, where the Spartans have a weakness. “We’ll probably be competitive this year,” Burton said. “But there’s no place to go but up.”
