OUTLOOK
The Vanguards have won two of the past three league championships and are favored to do so again, if . . . “We’re going to have to show we are able to play consistently for an entire game,” Tivenan said. “We didn’t do that all the time during the summer.” The Vanguards biggest need is in the backcourt, where they must replace Mike Terry, the league’s co-most valuable player, and Bob Baytosh. Erickson and Perez are competing for Terry’s point guard spot. Seltzer, Wilson and Wood will be tried at the off-guard position. “They’re replacing some big shoes,” Tivenan said. “That’s the void we have to fill.” If they do, the Vanguards will be solid. Their inside players, led by Aguilera, are the strongest in the league. Aguilera, a first-team all-league selection, averaged 11 points and 10 rebounds. Brown and Leedom are three-year starters. Tivenan said he is looking for Leedom to step up his performance. “Jon is a good all-around player,” Tivenan said. “He scores some, rebounds a little and plays good defense. This year, we need him to step up another level.”
