A decision by Cal State Long Beach to drop its football program has left the University of Wyoming and UCLA scrambling to find opponents to open the 1992 season.

The 49ers were scheduled to be the Cowboys’ opponent on Sept. 5 in Laramie. UCLA was to open its season Sept. 12 at the Rose Bowl against Cal State Long Beach.

Wyoming athletic director Paul Roach got on the telephone to other colleges as soon as he heard the news, said Kevin McKinney, sports information director.

“Right now, Paul is contacting as many schools as possible who might be in need of a game at this time,” McKinney said Tuesday. “There’s not a large pool of teams to draw from, but Paul is doing everything he can to get us that sixth game at home.”

UCLA officials were at a conference and could not be reached for comment. Cal State Long Beach also was scheduled to play Oregon, Hawaii, San Jose State, Fresno State, Nevada Las Vegas, Utah State, University of the Pacific, New Mexico State and Cal State Fullerton.
