Illinois Coach John Mackovic has agreed to become the new football coach at the University of Texas, the Austin American-Statesman reported Wednesday night.

Mackovic will fly to Austin today for a news conference to announce his hiring, the newspaper said.

Mackovic, 48, had topped the list in the search for a new coach at Texas, a former power that has had only two Top 10 finishes in the last 13 years.

The position was vacated Dec. 2 when David McWilliams resigned after compiling a five-year record of 31-26, with three losing seasons. McWilliams followed Fred Akers, who was dismissed in 1986 after going 5-6, his only losing season in 10 years. Under Akers, Texas finished No. 4 in 1981 and fifth in 1983.

Texas Athletic Director DeLoss Dodds interviewed Mackovic in Chicago Sunday night and Monday.

Mackovic said he hoped to tell Illinois officials and players his intentions before his departure to Austin today. Illinois (6-5) is preparing for the Dec. 31 John Hancock Bowl at El Paso against UCLA.

Illinois had been working on a long-term compensation package in an effort to keep Mackovic, who also serves as athletic director.

Mackovic has also been a Dallas Cowboy assistant and head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.
