Lights, Action, Strike!: Theaters and movie sets in Madrid were closed Thursday as actors, dancers and technicians went on strike to protest cutbacks in government support of the performing arts. Among projects halted was the filming of “Columbus” starring Gerard Depardieu. About 5,000 members of the Actors’ Union demonstrated in front of the Culture Ministry to draw attention to an eight-page complaint to the government that protests budget cuts and opposes “cultural colonialism and the invasion of trashy television programs.”
