73 Students Picked Up in Truancy Sweep
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies picked up 73 Antelope Valley high school students Thursday during a surprise truancy sweep, the first of the year by the high school district, school officials said.
The students, 40 of them from Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, were found at fast-food outlets and in shopping areas. They were taken to two holding sites and later released to their parents or schools, officials said. The truants face Saturday classes, Saturday work assignments and other measures as punishment.
The remaining students came from the district’s five other campuses.
Dave Rich, director of pupil personnel services for the Antelope Valley Union High School District, said the district asked the six sheriff’s deputies who normally patrol high school campuses to make the sweep.
