CAMARILLO : Permit Fee Waived on Low-Flow Toilets

Share

The Camarillo City Council has approved waiving a $25 permit fee for residents who want to install water-conserving toilets in their homes.

The waiver will operate in conjunction with a rebate program sponsored by the Calleguas Municipal Water District, which will start Jan. 1.

Under that program, any resident who installs a new ultra low-flow toilet will receive a $100 rebate for saving an average of 50 gallons of water a day per single-family household. If 5,000 toilets are replaced in Camarillo under the two-year program, residents would save more than $25,000 worth of water each year, according to Calleguas estimates.

Council members approved the waiver unanimously Wednesday. The waiver was adopted under an urgency ordinance to allow the city’s incentive program to start at the same time as the Calleguas program, officials said. A public hearing will be held on a regular ordinance allowing the waiver at the council’s Jan. 8 meeting.

The city should not lose much revenue by waiving the fee, said John Elwell, director of community services.

“Very few people are aware of the toilet permit,” he said. “Very few are taken out.”
