University of Illinois officials Thursday recommended defensive coordinator Lou Tepper as a new head football coach after John Mackovic resigned to coach the Texas Longhorns, sources said.
Illinois plays UCLA in the John Hancock Bowl at El Paso on Dec. 31.
Mackovic, 30-16-1 in four seasons at Illinois, resigned as coach and athletic director, recommending that the school promote Tepper to coach and Bob Todd from associate athletic director to athletic director. Mackovic will not coach the Illini in the Hancock Bowl.
