Airlines to Match Continental Fare Increase: American, United, Delta, Northwest and USAir said they will match a $20 fare increase that Continental initiated this week. The higher round-trip fares will apply to advance-purchase, non-refundable tickets, popular with non-business travelers. Continental, which is in bankruptcy court, tried to raise fares 5% across the board last summer but abandoned the idea when nobody else would. But times have changed for airlines, with Pan Am and Midway dying the past few weeks. As the number of carriers shrinks, it may be easier for the industry to charge more, analysts said.
