Killer of Suspected Car Thief Is Released

Share

A 53-year-old MacArthur Park-area man who shot to death a suspected car thief was released Friday after deputy district attorneys said he had apparently acted in self defense.

Enrique Agraz, fed up with repeated break-ins of his vintage collection of automobiles, rigged his prized 20-year old Volkswagen Beetle with a silent alarm. When the alarm went off in his Carondolet Street apartment Tuesday night, Agraz went down to the garage with a pistol.

He said the suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, kept advancing on him despite his warnings, and he fired a shot only intending to hit him in the arm.

The suspect died in a hospital and Rampart Division police booked Agraz for investigation of murder. On Friday, Deputy Dist. Atty. Norman Montrose said it appeared there was insufficient evidence for a prosecution.
