TUSTIN : Stop Sign Installed at Busy Intersection
The city this week installed a stop sign at Yorba Street and Amaganset Way, where a woman was killed recently while walking her dog. It also added stop signs at two locations on A Street.
The city has not yet completed traffic studies to determine whether the signs are legally warranted under state law, but they should be complete by the council’s next meeting Jan. 6, said City Engineer Bob Ledendecker.
Against the advice of the city attorney, the council voted earlier this month to install the stop signs after residents packed the council chambers. Family members of Paquita Said, the woman who was killed, and others said traffic has increased on surface streets during construction on the Costa Mesa Freeway.
They said that motorists routinely travel along Yorba Street at more than 60 m.p.h., making it dangerous for pedestrians because there is no stoplight or stop sign and not much light from street lamps.
A flashing yellow light was installed about a year and a half ago, but it is active only during the morning and afternoon hours when schoolchildren are present.
