A man who stole a car in a Cerritos high school parking lot led authorities on a brief car and foot chase before he was shot and wounded early Monday, police said.

The suspect forced a motorist out of his car at gunpoint at Gahr High School, and was spotted heading west on the Artesia Freeway.

Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop the Ford Mustang convertible, but the suspect kept going. Deputies followed the car off the freeway at Atlantic Avenue to near 69th Street and Atlantic, where the man stopped the car and fled on foot.
