PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Zendejas at 14 and Holding

Share

Kicker Tony Zendejas is still 14 for 14 in field-goal tries, but he hasn’t attempted a field goal in two weeks and needs at least one more made attempt in the Rams’ final game Sunday in Seattle to qualify his season as the NFL’s only perfect field goal performance ever.

“We turn the ball over before he gets a chance to kick,” Coach John Robinson said, referring to the team’s three turnovers inside the 20-yard line during Sunday’s 20-14 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. “If we could just get to fourth down. . . .”

Robinson said that he wouldn’t alter his thinking on attempting long, marginally makeable field goals simply to keep Zendejas’ season perfect.

“(You) try to win,” Robinson said. “It taints everything if you’re not trying to win.”

Even if they lose their 10th in a row Sunday and finish with a 3-13 record, the Rams are assured of selecting no better than fourth overall (they drafted fifth last year when they finished 5-11) in next year’s draft.

Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Tampa Bay are guaranteed to finish with worse records than the Rams. With a loss, Green Bay also would finish at 3-13, but lost to the Rams and would draft ahead of them.

If the Rams win Sunday, they could end up drafting sixth--behind Green Bay and San Diego, whom the Rams also defeated.
