Downey : Chief, Officers Agree to Be Candid in Settling Dispute

Downey Police Chief D. Clayton Mayes and the Downey Police Officers Assn., which called for the chief’s ouster last year, have agreed to follow “trust building guidelines” to avoid future conflicts, officials said Wednesday.

Mayes has agreed to meet monthly with police union representatives to obtain their input on issues affecting the department. He also agreed to be “up front, candid and admit mistakes.”

The police union agreed to be “direct, candid and up front,” to show respect for the chief and to give him credit when deserved.

City officials hope the new guidelines will put an end to the long-simmering dispute.
