SPORTSCOPE : UCLA Plays Ohio State in Volleyball Final Four

The sixth-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team will play No. 12 Ohio State in the semifinals of the NCAA championships at 7 tonight at Pauley Pavilion.

Second-ranked Cal State Long Beach (35-1) will meet No. 5 Louisiana State (35-1) in the other semifinal at 9.

The championship match is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pauley.

UCLA (29-5) won the West Regional title by defeating top-ranked Stanford in three games. In the opening match of the regional, the Bruins beat No. 8 New Mexico in three games. In the two matches, Natalie Williams led UCLA with 33 kills and 32 digs.

Ohio State (30-3) defeated Nebraska in four games to take the Mideast Regional championship. Long Beach won the Northwest Regional tournament with a five-game victory over Hawaii. South Regional champion LSU advanced by beating Florida in four games.

UCLA, the defending NCAA champion, has won eight consecutive three-game matches.

The Pepperdine women’s basketball team will meet Louisiana State in the Nevada Las Vegas-Showboat Shootout tournament at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Host UNLV (1-3) will play Southwest Missouri State (5-1) in Friday’s other game. The consolation game will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and the championship game at 7:30.

Four Santa Monica High senior football players were named to the All-Bay League first team: split end Cedric Meadows, tackle Luke Davis, quarterback Zack Nishimura and kicker and defensive back Sheldon Phillip-Guide.

K.C. Blinn, a Santa Monica senior guard, was a second-team selection.

The All-Bay League girls’ volleyball team included junior Heather Alef and seniors Glory Dolphin and Zoe Clark Williams of Santa Monica on the first team and senior Terri Berman and junior M’lissa Robertson of Santa Monica on the second team.
