Thousand Oaks : City Water-Theft Ordinance OKd
Thousand Oaks residents who tamper with their water meters may find themselves in court, the City Council decided.
On a 5-0 vote, the council gave preliminary approval this week to a water-theft ordinance that makes it easier for the city to prosecute people who illegally hook into water sources or tamper with their meters. If the ordinance gains final approval in January, it will go into effect in early February, City Utilities Director Don Nelson said.
Nelson said the city is also conducting a survey of 1,300 meters in the city to determine whether they have been altered to give a false reading.
The city is cracking down on water thieves after discovering two cases of water theft in the past year.
