3 Plead Guilty in Halloween Robbery

Three men charged with attempted robbery stemming from a shootout with police Halloween night in Mira Mesa that left a man dead pleaded guilty Thursday.

On the day they were to have a preliminary hearing, Son V. Nguyen, 20; Chau T. Tran, 22, and Hung My Truong, 20, all of San Diego, admitted attempting robbery.

The three could be sentenced to a maximum of three years in state prison and a $10,000 fine. San Diego Municipal Court Judge Daniel Davidson scheduled sentencing for Jan. 23.

According to court records, the district attorney’s office will not charge any of them with murder in the death of the fourth man or with using a gun during a felony.

San Diego police received a tip that robbery might occur in Mira Mesa, and the defendants were followed to a home in the 8100 block of Lakeport Road.

Police fatally shot Duc Ngo Huynh, 23, of San Diego, and wounded Tran and Nguyen. Police said one of the four fired at an officer, then police fired back.

The defendants all remain in County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.
