Jail Escapee Caught Re-Entering U.S.
An inmate who escaped from the men’s jail in Santee early Tuesday was captured Wednesday night after attempting to cross the border into the United States near San Ysidro, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.
Martin Martinez Martinez, 25, jumped a fence along the border a mile west of San Ysidro and was running in U.S. territory about 8:30 p.m. when he was caught by a U.S. Border Patrol agent, Sheriff’s Deputy Larry van Dusen said.
He said he did not know why Martinez was trying to re-enter the United States.
Martinez was turned over to the Sheriff’s Department after Border Patrol agents saw the tattoo “666” on his forehead and connected it to the description of the escapee, Van Dusen said.
Martinez, who was awaiting trial on charges of burglary and resisting arrest, escaped the Las Colinas men’s jail by scaling a 16-foot barbed-wire fence. He will be charged with escape, a felony, Van Dusen said.
