GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Palmdale Offense Misses Schielke in Santa Barbara Tournament Loss

Share

Palmdale High was without Kim Schielke on Friday night, which meant the Falcons were pretty much without an offense.

And Ursuline High of Santa Rosa took full advantage, running away to a 45-29 victory in a second-round game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions at San Marcos High.

Schielke suffered a sprained ankle Thursday in the second half of a game against Cerritos, a contest Palmdale eventually lost in overtime. She isn’t expected back until next week’s Thousand Oaks tournament.

Ursuline, leading by seven at the half Friday, broke the game open early in the third quarter behind the scoring of Joy Durand, a 5-foot-10 senior forward. Durand led all scorers with 20 points, including 13 in the third quarter when the Bears built a 17-point edge.

Durand’s scoring explosion was merely the finishing touch for Ursuline (6-1). Palmdale (5-4) missed a chance to take control in the first period while the Bears were struggling to get untracked. The Falcons forced Ursuline into six quick turnovers, but with Schielke unavailable to run the offense, Palmdale made 11 first-half turnovers of its own.
