Tony Tanti of the Buffalo Sabres scored three goals Friday night, but the Sabres’ 4-4 tie with the Edmonton Oilers at Buffalo extended the Sabres’ winless streak to 12 games.

The Sabres are 0-8-4 since their last victory.

The hat trick was Tanti’s first with the Sabres. He scored once in the first period and twice in the third. His game-tying goal came at 4:20. Brad May scored Buffalo’s other goal.

Bernie Nicolls scored two goals for Edmonton in the first period before he was ejected from the game in the final minutes of the second period for spearing. Petr Klima and Craig Simpson each added a goal for the Oilers.

Pat LaFontaine played for the Sabres for the first time since Nov. 16, when he sustained a broken jaw in a game against Calgary.

Washington 4, Toronto 3--Randy Burridge and Peter Bondra scored second-period goals at Landover, Md., as the Capitals swept the season series and increased the Maple Leafs’ winless streak to six games.

The goals by Burridge and Bondra enabled the Capitals to break from a 1-1 tie. Michal Pivonka’s goal with 12:41 left was the game-winner as the first-place Capitals, 3-0-1 in their last four games, increased their Patrick Division lead over the idle New York Rangers to six points.

Mike Foligno, Gary Leeman and Dave Ellett scored for the Maple Leafs, 0-5-1 since their last victory on Dec. 7.

Toronto went 0 for 5 on the power play and is one for 20 in its last four games.
