School District, Parents Seek to Improve Racial Harmony

Share

Alhambra School Districts Supt. Bruce Peppin and representatives of a multiethnic parents group said last week they are working together to solve racial problems in the schools.

Asian, Latino and Anglo community leaders have been pressing for improved multicultural education and training for more minority teachers and administrators since two fights last school year between San Gabriel High School students from several ethnic groups. Some students were suspended and others were charged by the district attorney’s office with misdemeanor battery on school property.

Peppin said he is is considering a program in which school staff and students could intervene when a racial conflict arises. The Alhambra districts have 20,794 students; 49% are Asian, 38% Latino, 11% Anglo, 1% black and 1% other races.
