A Guide to the Best of Southern California : THE ARTS : Doodle Days

Share

In Los Angeles’ burgeoning--and tres boheme-- espresso bar scene, taking pen to napkin is not simply idle doodling. Au contraire, in what passes in our city for a caffeinated Left Bank, the once-lowly serviette is now considered a canvas and the productions thereupon are, well, art. This genre has now been enshrined (reproduced on sturdy paper, of course) in the 1992 Table Napkin calendar.

The 13 pieces, many of them coffee-related, were culled from the recent napkin-art competition held by the Onyx/Sequel Coffeehouse and Gallery. You’ll find a year of art--real and surreal--from well-known artists such as Gronk, whose napkins have sold in galleries for four figures, as well as inspired unknowns.

Calendars are $10 signed, $7.50 unsigned. All profits are donated to the Barnsdall Junior Arts Center.
