World IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Kosovo’s Albanians Seek Independence

Leaders of the Albanian majority in Serbian-ruled Kosovo province declared that they will seek recognition from the European Community as an independent state. The move by the Democratic League, representing most of Kosovo’s nearly 2 million Albanians, is the latest in a series of independence claims tearing at the Yugoslav federation. Serbs in ethnically mixed Bosnia-Herzegovina proclaimed their own republic, two days after ethnic Serbs in secessionist Croatia made a similar move.
