Special Leader Is Winner in Champion of Champions
Special Leader, an 18-1 shot, overcame a sluggish start to win the $250,000 Champion of Champions race at Los Alamitos Saturday night.
Ridden by Kenneth Hart for trainer Mike Robbins and owner Joe Kirk Fulton, Special Leader covered the 440-yard course in 21.39 seconds, edging Isaws Sugar Bear by a neck. Refrigerator, the 4-5 favorite, finished third and Takin On The Cash was fourth.
The race had been expected to decide which of three horses--Apprehend, See Me Gone or Refrigerator--would be voted 1991 World Champion. Apprehend was ninth and See Me Gone was last in the 10-horse field.
