LA HABRA : Missing Woman Is Found by Boy

A 79-year-old woman who had wandered away from a convalescent home last week was safe with her family Monday after a child found her sitting on a dirt embankment, police said.

Gladys Opal Gividen was found about 9 p.m. Friday at Beach Boulevard and Hillsborough Drive in La Mirada, some 30 hours after she left the Meadows home on Whittier Boulevard in La Habra. Residents of the facility may leave on their own.

La Habra Police Lt. Jerry Cline said a boy spotted Gividen on an embankment about 5 miles from the home. He told his mother, who called the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“She was very disoriented,” Cline said. “She had been out in the cold so long she was transported to Friendly Hills Medical Center, where she was admitted for 24 hours’ observation.”

Janie Hefner, the home’s administrator, said Gividen, who has memory lapses, has lived at the home for less than two weeks and that Gividen may have been trying to walk to the apartment where she used to live.
