NEWPORT BEACH : High School to Add New Weight Room

Share

A new weight room will soon be the latest addition to Corona del Mar High School, thanks to parents and boosters who raised nearly $200,000.

The new facility will be built next to the school’s tennis courts and football field and will add about 4,000 square feet of gym space.

The area will be divided into a weight room, a meeting room, coaches offices and outdoor space. The exterior design will match the existing Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center.

“It’s going to make things a lot more accessible for the football team,” said Principal Tom Jacobson. “Anytime you can add a facility like this to your campus, it adds a lot of enthusiasm.”

Fund-raising efforts launched by the Touchdown Club, along with local contributors and benefactors of the school district, provided much of the cost.

Jacobson said the school was thankful for the community’s efforts, particularly during the recession. He added, “Particularly in times like these, the community picks up the slack and keeps the programs going.”

The school board will need to approve a bid to build the facility at a coming meeting, and the school hopes to have the new building completed in time for this fall’s football season.
