A Monterey Park man has been ordered to stand trial for the Nov. 2 armed theft of a Mercedes-Benz from a businessman.

Alhambra Municipal Court Judge John Martinez on Friday ordered Anh Van Dang, 21, to appear for arraignment Jan. 6 in Pasadena Superior Court on two counts of armed robbery.

In Dang’s preliminary hearing, Deputy Dist. Atty. Jon Schlueter said Dang admitted that he accosted video store owner Wai Kwong outside his business on the 200 block of East Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park.

Authorities say Dang pointed a handgun at Kwong, took $101 in cash from Kwong’s wallet and ordered him to turn over the keys to his 1992 Mercedes-Benz 300E.

Dang and another Monterey Park man were arrested Dec. 8 as they allegedly tried to rob a motorist of a six-pack of beer that had fallen out of the car.

Upon searching Dang’s residence, police found keys to Kwong’s car, authorities said.

Dang remains in custody in Men’s Central Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Initially, police said Dang was a suspect in up to 10 other Mercedes robberies that have occurred in the San Gabriel Valley since September. However, police now say they have found no evidence linking him to those crimes.
