Will Furrer of Virginia Tech threw a 44-yard touchdown pass just before halftime and directed a late scoring drive Wednesday as the Gray beat the Blue, 20-12, in the 54th Blue-Gray game.

The Gray scored with less than two minutes to go in the first half on Furrer’s pass to John Brown III of Houston, and scored again on its first possession of the second half after a 43-yard kickoff return by Vanderbilt’s Corey Harris.

Anthony McDowell of Texas Tech had a one-yard touchdown run with 11:27 left in the third quarter that provided the eventual winning margin.

After the Blue closed to 17-12 with seven minutes left on a one-yard run by USC’s Scott Lockwood, the Gray took more than five minutes off the clock with Furrer at the controls.

That set up the second field goal of the game by Roman Anderson of Houston, the NCAA’s career scoring leader. Anderson had missed a 37-yarder after the snap was bobbled, but he got another chance because the Blue team was offsides. Anderson’s 32-yarder with 1:56 left provided the final margin.

Furrer completed eight of 15 passes for 113 yards. Blue quarterback Matt Veatch of San Jose State connected on 12 of 19 for 124 yards.
