SPORTSCOPE : UCLA Women to Face Virginia in Tournament Opener at Pauley Pavilion Saturday

The UCLA women’s basketball team (4-2) will play host to top-ranked Virginia (7-0) in the first round of the L.A. Gear Catapult tournament at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.

In Saturday’s other game, USC (3-2) will meet Cal State Northridge (0-13) at 1:30 p.m.

On Sunday, UCLA (4-2) will play Northridge at 4 p.m. and the Trojans will play Virginia at 6.

UCLA is coming off a 72-58 victory over No. 22 Ohio State. Rehema Stephens led the Bruins with 26 points and 17 rebounds.

Virginia has averaged 91.6 points a game and held opponents to 51.1. The Cavaliers are led by guard Dawn Staley, last season’s NCAA player of the year, who is averaging 17.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists.

Four UCLA soccer players have been voted All-Americans by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America.

Goalkeeper Brad Friedel and defender Mike Lapper made the first team, and midfielder Joe-Max Moore and forward Cobi Jones the second.

The Santa Monica College football team (8-3), which won the Western State Conference Southern Division championship and edged San Bernardino Valley, 32-31, in the Western State I Bowl, was ranked No. 12 in California in the final poll of the JC Athletic Bureau.

Marlborough School senior Leigh Marston was named the most valuable girls’ volleyball player in the Southern Section 4-A Division.

Marlborough’s Tinka Brown was chosen as division coach of the year.

First team 4-A selections from Marlborough included sophomore Emily Boken, junior Catherine Juillard and senior Kerry Katzenbach. Marymount players who made the first team were seniors Tina Osterloh and Courtney Stanton.

The 1-A first team included freshman Kelly Gentile and senior Sarah Simmons of Brentwood School, and the second team included Brentwood junior Holly Davis and Windward senior Audrey Landreth.

UCLA’s Guy Baker was named 1991 coach of the year by the American Water Polo Coaches Assn.

In his first season as coach, Baker led the Bruins to a second-place finish in the NCAA tournament.

Bruins who made the coaches’ All-American first team were Oliver Will and goalkeeper Dan Hackett. It was Hackett’s second consecutive year on the team.

UCLA’s Gary O’Brien was named to the third team, and teammate Mike Wilmink received honorable mention.
