Pioneer Hi-Bred Wins Huge Award: Rival company Holden Foundation Seeds was ordered to pay Pioneer, of Des Moines, Iowa, $46.7 million in a trade secrets case involving valuable genetic materials. Pioneer said Holden illegally used its proprietary corn breeding materials to develop 177 lines of corn seed. The award was based on profits Pioneer lost because of Holden’s actions. Holden denied taking or using any Pioneer breeding materials, called the award “grossly excessive” and said it will appeal. Pioneer, which sought $76.2 million in damages plus interest, said it is also considering an appeal.
