NHL ROUNDUP : Maple Leafs Crumble Again, 6-4

Share

Doug Gilmour made an auspicious debut for Toronto Friday night at Detroit, but he couldn’t prevent the Maple Leafs from losing again.

Gilmour, obtained in a 10-player deal with the Calgary Flames on Thursday, scored in his first shift on the ice and assisted on a goal on his second shift.

But the 2-0 lead in the first five minutes wilted away once the Red Wings’ Paul Ysebaert and Steve Yzerman went to work in the second period.

Ysebaert had a hat trick and an assist and Yzerman had a goal and three assists to lead the Red Wings to a 6-4 victory over the Maple Leafs, who have won only 10 of 41 games.

It was the first three-goal game for Ysebaert, who has 19 goals. The last was into an empty net with 36 seconds left.

Although Toronto led, 3-1, after 7:30, the Red Wings were hammering away at goalie Grant Fuhr. The veteran had 36 saves, but it wasn’t good enough.

The Maple Leafs, last in the Norris Division, have lost nine of their last 11. The Red Wings, who lead the division, have won 10 of the last 13.

“It’s nice to be with a team that wants you,” Gilmour said. “I’m glad to get a score so quickly, but I’m disappointed we didn’t win.”

Vancouver 3, Washington 3--Jim Sandlak scored the tying goal at Landover, Md., with 4:31 left in regulation and extended the unbeaten streak to nine games (6-0-3). It’s the second longest streak in Canucks’ history. In 1977, they went 10 games without a loss.

The Canucks, who won 28 of 80 games last season, lead the Smythe Division by nine points over the Winnipeg Jets and have 22 victories midway through the season.

The tie enabled the Capitals to take a one-point lead over the New York Rangers in the Patrick Division.

“I’m not discouraged at all,” Coach Terry Murray said. “I think we worked real hard and did a lot of good things. Remember, Vancouver is a good team that’s playing exceptionally well.”

Buffalo 5, New York Islanders 2--Alexander Mogilny, after assisting on a goal in the second period at Buffalo, had a hat trick in the third to lead the Sabres.

Pat LaFontaine, who played eight seasons for the Islanders, had three assists in his first game against his former teammates.

Mogilny scored his three goals in less than five minutes. His first came at 2:49, the third at 7:31. LaFontaine set up two of them.

When Mogilny started his spree, the Sabres had only a 2-1 lead.

Tom Kurvers scored both goals for the Islanders.

The Islanders lost all three games on the trip and remained in the cellar in the Patrick Division.

San Jose 3, Philadelphia 1--Dale Craigwell’s first NHL goal snapped a 1-1 tie in the final period and helped the Sharks defeat the Flyers at Daly City, Calif.

Craigwell scored a power-play goal 4:37 into the third period and Kelly Kisio added an empty net goal with 26 seconds remaining.

Doug Wilson’s unassisted goal 8:13 into the first period gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead and Kevin Dineen’s goal with 4:54 left in the first period tied the score.

The Flyers are 0-2-1 on their four-game trip, which ends tonight against the Kings at the Forum.

Jeff Hackett made 27 saves for San Jose.
