Dale Brown, the mercurial coach of Louisiana State, was angry earlier this season when his team lost by 20 points to Arizona.

But Brown was even more upset Friday night after LSU defeated Texas, 84-83, before 42,211 at the Superdome in New Orleans.

“This is the maddest I’ve ever been in 20 years at the university,” Brown said. “This is the stupidest we’ve ever played.

“We were lousy. We did not execute. The 20-point loss to Arizona did not irritate me as much as this game did. We did not deserve to win.”.

Freshman Clarence Ceasar stole an inbounds pass and made the winning basket with 25 seconds left to give LSU (6-3) the victory.

Texas (6-6) forced LSU into committing 24 turnovers.

LSU led, 72-63, with 8:32 left in the game, but Texas came back to take an 81-79 lead with 3:11 left on a basket by Gerrald Houston.

Shaquille O’Neal made a turnaround jumper and the first shot of a one-and-one to put LSU ahead, 82-81. But the Tigers could not handle Texas’ press. B.J. Tyler made an underhand shot from eight feet to give Texas an 83-82 lead with 1:05 left.

Vernel Singleton missed the front of a one-and-one with 30 seconds left. After a timeout with 27 seconds remaining, Ceasar stole the inbounds pass, dribbled twice and made the winning shot.

Texas had a chance to win with three seconds left, but O’Neal blocked a shot by Albert Burditt.
