Protester Locks Herself to Car at Auto Show
An animal rights activist dressed as a pink pig was arrested Saturday after she handcuffed herself to a Cadillac at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, police said.
Lucy Shelton, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, protested the alleged use of animals in General Motors Corp. crash tests.
Shelton handcuffed herself to the steering wheel of a Cadillac, which was parked on a revolving platform at the show being held at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Police and security guards used a bolt cutter to free her and she was booked for investigation of creating a disturbance, Police Sgt. Lou Brown said.
About 12 other members of the animal rights organization who walked around the convention center chanting “Boycott General Motors!” were escorted from the building by security guards, said Dan Mathews, a PETA spokesman.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals contends that GM is the last auto maker to use animals in its tests on automobile safety.
Three members of PETA were arrested at the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day after unfurling a banner that read “Animal Crash Tests Keep GM in the Dark Ages.”
