STYLE : FASHION : Cold Snap

If Oscar, Yves and Gianni can do it, so can Bogner, Head and Peregrine. Inspired by the designs coming off the runways in New York, Paris and Milan, major sportswear companies are sending to the slopes form-follows-function skiwear with more elaborate details than ever before.

Tapestry trim, ornate fasteners, tasseled belts and other decorative touches distinguish the latest cold-weather sportswear from skiwear as we’ve known it. Ditto for the high-tech fabrics in rich, saturated colors such as cinnabar red, olive green, mustard and cranberry. There are satins, materials that feel like suede and velvet, and jacquards that look like brocade.

“Fabric technology has finally reached a point where waterproof, warm and durable fabrics are also pretty and comfortable,” says Missy Heffron, skiwear buyer of Sandy’s Ski and Sport. “The styling is taken straight from high-fashion designers. Neon is out. The rich, sporty look is in.”

To complete the look, just add cozy mittens or gloves. From there, everything else is downhill.
