NHL ROUNDUP : Flames’ Win Ends So-So Weekend

Share

When National Hockey League teams play a back-to-back series, there is seldom a sweep. Usually, each team wins on its home ice.

The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers split their weekend series, but with a twist. Each won on the road and by the same score.

The Flames, who lost Saturday night at home, 3-2, came back to win Sunday night at Edmonton.

Theoren Fleury and Paul Ranheim each had a goal and an assist to get the Flames rolling.

With the victory, Calgary ended a three-game road losing streak and vaulted over the Oilers into a tie with the Kings for third place in the Smythe Division.

Goaltender Mike Vernon held the Oilers, who have lost four of their last five games, scoreless until Petr Klima scored near the end of the second period. Klima assisted on the other Oilers’ goal, which came with 29 seconds left in the game.

Vernon faced only 21 shots, but he made a number of difficult stops.

Although they have won four of their last five games, the Flames still trail Vancouver, the surprise leader of the division, by 12 points.

Chicago 5, Minnesota 2--Jeremy Roenick continued his hot scoring pace and the Blackhawks won their second in a row after failing to win in five consecutive games.

Roenick had two goals and an assist at Chicago to give him six goals and three assists in his last four games.

Linemate Steve Larmer scored the other goal in the three-goal second period that cost the North Stars their second defeat in six games.
