* John Joseph Nolan; Assemblyman’s Father

John Joseph (Pop) Nolan, father of Assemblyman Pat Nolan (R-Glendale), has died in Burbank. He was 81.

A longtime Burbank resident, the senior Nolan died Saturday of complications of emphysema, said his son Mike Nolan of Burbank.

Born in Nashville, John Joseph Nolan came to California at age 9. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1928 and earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Loyola University in 1932. Nolan worked as an accountant for Ceco Steel Products Corp. in Los Angeles for 43 years and was among the pioneers in importing steel projects from Japan after World War II. He took a break from Ceco in the early 1950s to make government training films with Van Ronkel Productions.

He was also active in several Irish organizations, including Eddie Masterson’s Irish Rovers and the Peter Murray Irish Republican Club.

In addition to sons Pat and Mike, Nolan is survived by his sons William Nolan and Thomas Nolan, both of La Canada-Flintridge; daughters Bijou (Bebe) Nolan of Burbank, Denise (Denny) Delurgio of Torrance and Maureen Nolan of Arcadia; and nine grandchildren. His wife, Bijou Brinkop Nolan, died in 1974. His children Michele Marie Nolan and John J. Nolan died in 1984 and 1990, respectively.

Visitation is planned from 1 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Valley Funeral Home, 2121 W. Burbank Blvd. in Burbank, which is handling the arrangements. A rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. tonight at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 145 N. 5th St. in Burbank. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m Wednesday at the church, with burial to follow at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills.
