OXNARD : Willie Brown to Talk at King Event

Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco) will be the keynote speaker at a daylong festival commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday Jan. 20, festival organizers announced Thursday.

The birthday observance will begin with an 8:30 a.m. Freedom March from Plaza Park at 5th and C streets in Oxnard, followed by a ceremony at the Oxnard Community Center, 800 Hobson Way.

The ceremony will feature a speech by Brown on “The American Dream” and music by the Martin Luther King Choir. Brunch will also be served. Tickets, which cost $6, are on sale at the Civic Auditorium.

The event is sponsored by the county’s Martin Luther King Committee, the city of Oxnard and Oxnard College.

Other activities to celebrate King’s birthday include a 7 p.m. reception, art exhibit and African-American fashion show at the Civic Auditorium on Jan. 17. Admission to this event is free.

At 7 p.m. Jan. 18, Oxnard playwright James G. White will stage his play “Was It Only a Dream?” in the Oxnard Room of the Oxnard Community Center, which is next to the Civic Auditorium. White, who studied theater in New York, has written several plays and poems inspired by the civil rights movement. Admission is free.
