Park-and-Ride Lot to Open in Palmdale

A park-and-ride lot with 624 spaces, aimed at easing traffic congestion on the Antelope Valley Freeway, is scheduled to open next Friday in Palmdale.

The City Council, responding to complaints of thefts at park-and-ride lots elsewhere in the Antelope Valley, unanimously voted Thursday night to spend $41,250 for a security guard who will patrol the lot.

This is the first park-and-ride lot built by the city. Initially, the lot will serve car pools, but Los Angeles County transit officials hope to eventually provide bus service from the lot.

The lot at the Antelope Valley Freeway’s Avenue S off-ramp will be open 24 hours. The guard will patrol the lot from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The city spent $900,000 for the 8.7-acre site and $750,000 to construct the lot, city officials said.
