NHL ROUNDUP : Two-Goal Burst Feeds Flames

Al MacInnis and Theoren Fleury scored seven seconds apart during the third period Friday night at Calgary as the Flames beat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 7-5.

MacInnis beat Wendell Young at 6:49 of the final period to break a 4-4 tie and Fleury made the score 6-4 at 6:56. Pittsburgh, playing without NHL scoring leader Mario Lemieux for the third consecutive game, got within one on Troy Loney’s goal at 12:34, but Joel Otto scored an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining to ensure the victory.

Calgary’s first goal, credited to Ron Stern, came when Pittsburgh’s Kevin Stevens’ shot missed the net, bounced around the boards and down into the Pittsburgh zone, where it deflected off Young’s stick and into the net.

Buffalo 8, Edmonton 2--Pat LaFontaine had three goals for his ninth career hat trick and added three assists for six points, the most by a Buffalo player this season, as the Sabres won at Buffalo.

The line of LaFontaine, Alexander Mogilny and Dave Andreychuk scored all but two of Buffalo’s goals and is credited with 32 of the Sabres’ last 47 goals.

Winnipeg 6, Chicago 2--The Jets scored four power-play goals and another while short-handed to beat the Blackhawks at Winnipeg.

Phil Housley, Troy Murray, Pat Elynuik and Stu Barnes all scored on the power play for the Jets. Danton Cole had a short-handed goal during the first period.
