Lassie, the beloved collie, starred in several movies in the 1940s and headlined her own CBS series from 1954 to 1971. The various Lassies actually were Laddies and were trained by Rudd Weatherwax.

Rin Tin Tin (a.k.a. “Rinty”), the courageous German shepherd, had been a movie favorite since 1922. Three different shepherds were used on the popular ABC TV series “The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin” (1954-59). Two of them were direct descendants of the original Rinty who died in 1932; the other was the child of another movie dog, Flame Jr. Lee Duncan was the Rin Tin Tins’ trainer.

Dawg, the Bradleys’ mixed-breed family pet on “Petticoat Junction” (CBS, 1963-70) was played by Higgins and later achieved movie stardom as the original Benji.

Boomer, the little mixed-breed, trained by Bryan Renford and Ray Berwick, starred in his own NBC series (1980-82).

Tramp was the Douglas family pet on “My Three Sons” (ABC and CBS, 1960-72).

Jasper was Bentley Gregg’s (John Forsythe) shaggy dog on “Bachelor Father” (CBS, NBC and ABC, 1957-62).

Cleo, the basset hound, observed the world of her owner Socrates “Sock” Miller (Jackie Cooper) on “The People’s Choice” (NBC, 1955-58).

Jack, the feisty Jack Russell terrier, kept losing his glass eye when his owner Jake (Stephen Collins), an American soldier of fortune, would gamble it away in card games on “Tales of the Gold Monkey” (ABC, 1982-83).

Zeus and Apollo were Robin Masters’ loyal Dobermans who loved Higgins (John Hillerman) but were always nipping at Magnum’s (Tom Selleck) heels on “Magnum, P.I.” (CBS, 1980-88).

Bijoux, the Jack Russell terrier (played by Britches), made life miserable for his adopted owner (John Ritter) on ‘Hooperman” (ABC, 1987-89).

Matisse, the Scottish border collie (played by Mike the Dog), was as neurotic as his family on “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” (Fox, 1987).

Reuben, the German shepherd mix (played by Bo), loved wearing his owner’s (Matthew Laurance) baseball caps on “Duet” (Fox: 1987-89).

Bullet was the German shepherd best friend of Roy Rogers’ on “The Roy Rogers Show” (NBC 1951-57).
