A former Thousand Oaks man accused of threatening his estranged girlfriend with a gun and shooting a friend who intervened was arrested early Monday at a Calabasas motel, authorities said.

Joel Matthew Guinn, 28, was arrested at 2 a.m. on suspicion of attempted murder after an informant told investigators that the suspect was staying at the Good Nite Inn on Agoura Road, said Sheriff’s Detective Mike Powers.

Deputies had searched for Guinn since the Jan. 6 shooting of Michael Todd Roberts, 29, in the Thousand Oaks residence of Alicia O’Neill, Guinn’s former girlfriend.

Guinn, who had lived with O’Neill until she told him to leave a week before the shooting, returned to the Avenida de las Flores house while Roberts was visiting, Powers said.

Guinn argued with O’Neill and then got a gun from his car, Powers said.

Guinn “pointed the gun at Ms. O’Neill, took aim at her head and cocked the gun,” Powers said.

Roberts, who told investigators that he believed that Guinn was about to fire, moved in between the quarreling couple and tried to grab Guinn’s weapon, Powers said. Guinn then allegedly fired a single shot that struck Roberts in the abdomen, Powers said.

Roberts was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center and treated for a gunshot wound.
