Nicholas Perkins Hardeman, 68, 1986 Outstanding Professor for the California State University system. He had taught history at Cal State Long Beach for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986 because of poor health. An expert on Western and California history, he wrote several books, including one on the history of corn. Hardeman, known as “Perk,” served on more than 100 statewide committees, boards and commissions and was on Cal State’s Academic Senate for a record 24 years. On Thursday in Garden Grove of cancer.
