Cudahy : Petition Drive Seeks Repeal of 4% Utility Users Tax

Critics of a utility users tax imposed by the City Council last winter have begun circulating petitions urging voters to repeal the ordinance.

Arguing that Cudahy residents are among the nation’s poorest, residents Lawrence Galvan and Charles E. Sousa last week began handing out petitions demanding that the council place an advisory measure on the ballot asking residents whether they support the 4% tax on electricity, gas, water, telephones and trash collection.

Galvan and Sousa also have begun circulating petitions calling for district elections in the one-square-mile town. Because a majority of the five council members live in the northwestern corner of the city, Galvan and Sousa charge that the rest of the city has been ignored.

The pair have six months to gather about 300 signatures.
