Spring Warmth to Prevail in Mid-Winter

The weather will continue to ignore the calendar this weekend, giving San Diego plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures.

“It’s the middle of winter, but we will have just delightful weather this weekend,” said Wilbur Shigehara of the National Weather Service in San Diego.

The high-pressure system that has been over the region for the past two weeks will remain for the immediate future, Shigehara said, and its presence will ward off any incoming storms.

The Santa Ana winds that raised temperatures earlier this week will weaken by Saturday.

The downtown area will have a high of 68 degrees today and Saturday. As warm winds arrive Sunday, the high will reach 73, Shigehara said.

Highs will be lower at the beaches and a bit higher inland. Downtown lows will be 42 to 50 all weekend.

A storm in the Gulf of Alaska will send larger waves to San Diego beaches this weekend, Shigehara said. The surf, normally 2 to 3 feet in January, should increase a foot or two; high tides will reach 7 feet Friday and Saturday and 7.6 feet Sunday morning.

Participants in the America’s Cup races can count on normal sea breeze conditions today and Saturday, Shigehara said.
