Gary K. Hayward, 56, of Arcadia has been named president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Assn., after 30 years of membership in the organization.

Hayward selected “Entertainment on Parade” as the theme of the 1993 Rose Parade as a tribute to art, music, literature, movies, television and sports, which he said allow people to escape from their daily routines.

He is vice president and general manager of Tiernay Aerospace Services Inc. Hayward began his Tournament career in 1962 and was named to the nine-member executive committee in 1986. His wife, Sharon Doty Hayward, was a Rose Princess in 1956. The Haywards have two grown children.

Hayward succeeds Robert Cheney as president. Cheney presided over a Rose Parade beset by controversy. His theme, “Voyages of Discovery” and the naming of Cristobal Colon, a descendant of Christopher Columbus, as grand marshal angered American Indian groups. The acrimony subsided somewhat after Colorado Congressman Ben Nighthorse Campbell, an American Indian, was named co-marshal.

Each year, one tournament member is named to the executive committee when the immediate past president leaves. This year the new member is Kenneth H. Burrows, a volunteer since 1973. As the newest member of the committee, he is in line to be president of the first Rose Parade in the 21st Century on Jan. 1, 2000.
