Compton : Latino Students March at College, Demand Assistance

Share

A group of 50 Latino students demonstrated at Compton College this week, demanding more classes, better facilities, and more faculty and administrative representation for Latinos and other minorities.

Waving banners and signs while marching up and down Artesia Boulevard, the group passed out flyers and called for other students to join their cause.

“We are here to show the community and the administration that we want better education for all students, which includes more classes, cleaner facilities and equal representation of all races,” student Lucy Hernandez said.

The Tuesday demonstration was organized by a Latino student group after its representative was not allowed to speak at the Jan. 14 Board of Trustees meeting, student protest leader Jose Reza said.

College President Warren Washington said the head of the board of trustees decides who speaks at board meetings and that he could not say why the group was not allowed to speak. Washington met with protest leaders after the demonstration to receive a formal letter detailing their concerns.
