Vanishing faster than the buffalo, the amazing, disappearing Lakers lost another center.

On the positive side, at least it wasn’t a new experience for them.

Elden Campbell sprained an ankle and went only 20 minutes, so Mike Dunleavy went with six other players all Friday night--including four guards--as the Lakers handed the Sacramento Kings their 45th consecutive Forum loss, 95-92.

The Lakers didn’t go ahead to stay until Sam Perkins blocked rookie Randy Brown’s shot, sending Byron Scott away for a fast-break dunk with 3:41 left.

Fittingly, they finished with all four guards on the floor, defending as Mitch Richmond missed a last attempt at a tying three-pointer.

“I said, ‘What else?’ ” Dunleavy said.

“The poor guy (Campbell). All year the times he’s playing good, he sprains his ankle. (Thursday) night he had a very good game. Tonight he started out good. You could see it. He was aggressive, he was going to the boards.

“I don’t know how we can gut it out any better than we did tonight . . . It comes down to a midget lineup for us.

“I was just going to double down on everything. Double-team and hope they made a mistake on the rotations. They were two for eight on three-pointers. I feel pretty good about that.”

The Lakers get four days off. In the last week, they played five games, including three on the road. In the last three, they didn’t have James Worthy. They went 3-2.

The Lakers, already without Magic Johnson, Vlade Divac and Worthy, saw Campbell limp to the bench 1:10 into this game.

Then Sedale Threatt picked up his second foul 3:49 into the game and Dunleavy had to bench him to keep him out of further trouble.

Thus it was a further diminished little band of Lakers who struggled through the night, arm in arm with the Kings.

They were tied, amazingly, at 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36, neither team seemingly able to muster the energy to take the lead.

Finally, Richmond, trying to rifle a pass to a teammate under the basket, instead hit center Duane Causwell, innocently cutting across the lane, in the head. The ball bounced to the Lakers, who started a fast break and Scott scored on a layup, was fouled and made the free throw.

This started the Lakers on a 10-4 spurt, putting them up, 44-38.

Of course, the Kings caught up and the score was again tied at 46 and 48.

With time running out in the half, Spud Webb broke down the Laker defense and found 6-9 rookie Pete Chilcutt in the corner. Chilcutt drilled a three-pointer and it was the Kings who went in with the lead at halftime, 51-48.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Kings were still clinging to an 86-83 lead.

But Terry Teagle made a 15-footer with 4:53 left. Then Perkins blocked Brown’s layup, Scott dunked on the fast break and the Lakers were ahead to stay.

With 1:20 left, Teagle’s driving layup made it 91-88.

With :42 left, Richmond made it 91-90 with a 15-footer.

With :20 left, Scott drove the lane, was ruled to have been bumped by Richmond--who protested--and made two free throws for a 93-90 lead.

With :10 left, Richmond made it 93-92 with a running 10-footer.

The Kings were obliged to foul Threatt in the backcourt. With :09 left, he made both free throws to make it 95-92.

Richmond missed from behind the three-point line.

Laker Notes

James Worthy was scratched again because of a sore left knee. Doctors plan to re-examine him Sunday. . . . The four Laker guards scored 66 of their 95 points: Byron Scott and Terry Teagle, 22 apiece; Sedale Threatt 14 and Rory Sparrow eight. . . . Remarkably, the Lakers also outrebounded the Kings, 46-36.
