How unfortunate it is that municipalities are reluctant to provide room for churches because those establishments do not generate tax revenue (“Holy Wars for Turf,” Jan. 19). In calculating the value of local churches, city officials need to consider the services that those institutions are increasingly providing to their communities.

These services often include programs to feed and clothe the hungry and homeless, activities to entertain and enrich teen-agers, support groups for the lonely and brokenhearted and activities for the elderly. In addition, churches generally promote values and belief systems that make its congregants better citizens and neighbors. These contributions to the community should not be dismissed because they cannot be quantified.
